Ultimate Catskills Guide: The Perfect Weekend Trip

Located just two hours north of New York City, The Catskills is the perfect year-round destination attracting visitors seeking an effortless weekend in the great outdoors. New hotels, restaurants, and shops continue to emerge with its growing popularity. Whether you’re planning to ski in the winter, hike and admire the foliage in the fall, or swim and sip local brew in the summer – you’ll find plenty to do here. I’m sharing everything you need to know in this Ultimate Catskills Guide!

Where To Stay

Let’s find you the perfect accommodations!

With so many great options, honing in on a spot can be tough. The towns have similar rustic mountain vibes, but also have their own unique gems. My favorite towns that I would recommend to stay in are Tannersville, Hunter, or Windham.

Airbnb

If you opt for an Airbnb experience then I highly recommend The Hunter Houses. You can choose between three uniquely restored homes in the heart of Hunter, all with 5-star reviews! A no-brainer if you want the extra space and privacy.

Best Hotels

Cozy boutique hotel located in Tannersville. Amenities include an oversized pool and popular cocktail bar.

Family-friendly resort located in Windham. Plenty of on-site activities including a heated pool, wood fire saunas, pickle ball courts, fire pits and more.

Private minimalist cabins for those seeking a “glamping” type experience. They also offer standard rooms. Located in Windham.

Built on a former farm, now a restored resort with a main house, cottages, and hilltop motel with retro designs.

Small, rustic inn made up of just six rooms. Located in Tannersville with a popular, upscale restaurant.

Bespoke mountain lodge known for its views of Hunter mountain. Great bar.

Where To Eat

Now that you’ve locked in accommodations, next up is some grub. Here are some of my favorite spots. Don’t forget to make reservations in advance!

Brunch

Fellow Mountain Cafe: coffee and breakfast shop located in Hunter

Phoenicia Diner: a Catskills staple and absolute must when visiting. It’s more than just a diner with the fluffiest, most delicious pancakes you will eat. Do not skip!

Circle W: serves coffee, breakfast and lunch along with speciality groceries and essentials.

Maggie’s Krooked Cafe: located in Tannersville. Great for a lazy breakfast or lunch.

Snacks Or Pantry Items?

Check out Para Casa in Windham. It’s one of my favorite spots for upscale pantry items and provisions!

Dinner

Deer Mountain Inn: upscale dining with a seasonal tasting menu by a Michelin-starred chef.

Peekamoose Restaurant: restored farmhouse serving refined American dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. 25-30 minute drive from Tannnersville and Hunter.

Prospect at Scribner’s: American cuisine with indoor and outdoor dining with a gorgeous view of Hunter Mountain.

Babbler’s Restaurant: located in the Wylder Hotel. A popular spot amongst locals for flavorful American plates.

Jessie’s Harvest House: casual and comfy dining serving comfort food.

Helpful Tip: Many stores and restaurants are closed on Monday and Tuesday. Make sure to check their hours in advance.

These are some of the best spots in the Catskills to grab a local brew or glass of vino. Most spots are dog-friendly and have adorable outdoor seating with fire pits.

Hiking & Winter Activities

The most popular hike amongst visitors is Kaaterskill Falls. From the parking area to the trailhead, you’ll have to hug the shoulder of the road and walk along Route 23A; unfortunately there isn’t a better way to get to the starting path. It’s a moderately challenging hike requiring boots or sneakers and ends with gorgeous waterfall views. At the top is a viewing platform which is great spot for rest and pictures with pups 🙂

If you’re not much of a hiker, then check out Plattekill Falls. It’s a much shorter trek than Kaaterskill and not as popular, but still offers great waterfall views.

Artist’s Rock, Sunset Rock and Newman’s Ledge via Mary’s Glen Trail is a wonderful loop in Catskill State Park. Sunset Rock gives one of the most memorable views of North-South Lake.

Ski at Windham Mountain and Hunter Mountain. Both are great mountains in the Northeast and many debate which has better trails, so make sure to check out both for comparison!

Hunter Mountain

For a variety of winter activities, check out Bearpen Mountain Sports. Some of the best highlights include cross-country skiing, tubing, fat tire biking and ice skating.
